Song Hye Kyo English Interview

Song Hye Kyo explained that she was answering the interview questions at her dinner table after getting home from filming her upcoming drama “Now, We Are Breaking Up” (literal title) starring Jang Ki Yong. On her table was the drama’s script, which she had to memorize once she was done with the interview.

Asked about “Now, We Are Breaking Up” and how it’s different from her previous romance dramas, Song Hye Kyo explained, “I get asked, ‘Are you doing another romance drama?’ but I think that in the romance dramas I acted in during my 20s,  during my 30s, and now, I’m changing externally and internally, and I believe there are small differences in the feelings I portray as I act. I think that as time passes and I build myself through various experiences, the aspects I express while acting, even if it’s of the same situation, will definitely be different from the past.”

She also explained that there are more diverse female-centric projects to choose from due to the rise of new platforms. “The female lead of ‘Now, We Are Breaking Up’ is not one from a fairytale-like fantasy romance. She’s a character who’s similar to my age, and her worries and situations were very realistic. Ha Young Eun approaches work and love in an active and powerful way. In love or in a relationship, she loves herself first, and she has a wise and healthy mindset regarding love and her relationship with those around her. I really wanted to act as this character of Ha Young Eun in a new way.”

Ha Young Eun is the manager of the design team at a fashion label, which raises anticipation for the various looks Song Hye Kyo will be showcasing. The actress commented, “I think my fans are looking forward to that aspect a lot. And because it’s a fashion-related drama, they think I’ll appear with very fancy visuals. But Ha Young Eun herself is not so much fancy, but more sophisticated and trendy, so I think I’ll be showing you an image that fits that character. I don’t think being fancy necessarily means being fashionable. The image that fits Ha Young Eun is one that’s basic and minimal. But I am wearing many more pretty jewelry and outfits compared to my previous project. It’s been a while since I’ve played a character I can comfortably spruce myself up for, so I’m having fun filming.”

Song Hye Kyo shared how the hot summer weather and the COVID-19 pandemic are affecting the drama’s shoots. “Filming isn’t as easy as it was before due to the pandemic situation. Because filming has to take place in safe conditions, extra care needs to be taken regarding the filming environment, so all of the staff and actors seem very tired. The drama is slated to air in late autumn. We’re filming during the summer, but we decided to wear fall clothing. It is hard to film in 36 to 37 degree (Celcius) weather wearing fall clothes, but I think it will be worth it when I watch the broadcast later.”

Asked how her mindset or behaviors change between when she’s working on a drama and when she’s off season, Song Hye Kyo answered, “When I start a drama, I spend five to six months living just for the drama. Time is inevitably spent that way. From the moment I wake up until the moment I go to bed, I’m living as that character, so there’s no time for myself as Song Hye Kyo. When I work, I need to always maintain some tension, so that naturally gives me energy. And I also receive positive energy from the actors and staff who work with me, so even if it’s tiring, I can head into filming with a happy and thankful heart. When I’m not working on a project, I get more lethargic and lazy, and I get sick as well. Because I have a lot of time, I lazily think, ‘I’ll just do it tomorrow, ’ and gain weight. I think I’m healthier when I’m working.”

Song Hye Kyo Picks

Following “Now, We Are Breaking Up, ” Song Hye Kyo will be starring in writer Kim Eun Sook’s “The Glory.” “The Glory” is an eight-episode revenge story about a former school violence victim who grows up to become the perpetrator’s child’s homeroom teacher. Song Hye Kyo remarked, “‘The Glory’ is a of a genre that I haven’t experienced often in the past. It was a genre I’ve always wanted to try, so I’m excited, worried, and nervous… those are the feelings I keep getting. But even though it’s hard, I think I’ll be able to enjoy acting. I’m excited to know what Kim Eun Sook’s [revenge story] will be like and what it will be like to work with director Ahn Gil Ho. After wrapping up ‘Now, We Are Breaking Up’ well, I have to work hard on my next project again.”

Vogue brought up Song Hye Kyo’s friendship with other actresses that often make it to the news. She exchanges coffee trucks with actresses like Song Yoon Ah and Kim Hee Sun and presses “like” on Kim Hye Soo‘s Instagram posts. She also went to watch a play with Park Hyo Joo, who is also starring in “Now, We Are Breaking Up.”

Regarding this, Song Hye Kyo commented, “I have such amazing seniors. It’s a blessing in my life. They always give my courage, love, and sometimes consolation and strength to go in a good direction. I hadn’t expressed it much until now, but I want to thank them for being a great source of strength. I met [Park] Hyo Joo for the first time in 2004 in the drama ‘Sunlight Pours Down.’ At the time, we were both so young and shy that we didn’t get to converse much. We’ve reunited almost 17 years later through our drama this time, and we’ve been talking to each other nonstop ever since. She’s a year younger than I am, but she often feels more like an older sister. Hyo Joo’s words and her heart that pat me on the back always make me feel warm. And actress Choi Hee Seo, whom I met for the first time through this drama, I was her fan. I thought, ‘How can she be so good at acting?’ and was curious about her. Perhaps due to fate, we ended up working on the same project and came to know each other. Now, she’s like a real younger sister to me, and thanks to Hee Seo’s positive and right energy, there’s always laughter around me. I’m thankful to be able to spend these moments with them.”The impact of a single drama Descendants of the Sun seems to be lasting longer and stronger than any other hallyu, or Korean wave, drama than before.
