This report presents the details of our research into how South Korean online news media represent ‘Australia’ (‘Hoju’ in Korean). It was a multi-method research project (combining key informant interviews and computational ‘big data’ approaches) offering insight into how online news is produced and curated in the Korean mediascape. In particular the data is telling us, albeit within a relatively short timeframe, about what kind of news stories relating to Australia are being reported in the South Korean online news media.

Situasi berisiko yang dihadapi Presiden Korea Selatan dapat dilihat pada level internasional ketika dihadapkan oleh perilaku provokatif Korea Utara dan kegaduhan politik domestik akibat rencana penandatanganan General Security of Military Information Agreement (GSOMIA) dengan Jepang. Kontroversi rencana penandatanganan kerjasama ini, menunjukan bahwa Presiden Lee Myung Bak berada pada posisi domain yang buruk secara objektif didukung dengan data-data subjektif dari biografi yang ia tulis. Karenanya, ia memutuskan untuk menunda kerjasama hingga masa kepemimpinannya berakhir. Menurut dalil prospect theory, buruknya domain yang dimiliki Lee seharusnya membuat ia berani mengambil risiko untuk memperbaiki domainnya. Namun sebaliknya, Lee menunjukan kecenderungan perilaku yang menghindari risiko demi mengamankan domainnya dari kerugian yang lebih besar. Penelitian ini menggunakan Prospect Theory yang dikembangkan oleh Rose Mcdermott untuk menjelaskan apa yang menjadi landasan pengambilan keputusan Presiden Lee Myun Bak terhadap kerjasama bilateral GSOMIA dengan Jepang pada tahun 2012. Skripsi ini membahas upaya Korea Selatanbaik pemerintah maupun pihak swasta dalam menghapus larangan Hallyu di China yang merupakan respon dari disepakatinya kerjasama Korea Selatan dan Amerika dalam penempatan penangkal rudal atau Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) yang merupakan perlindungan Korea Selatan dari rudal milik Korea Utara. Penelitian ini berfokus pada tahun 2016-2017 di mana pada tahun 2016 adalah tahun disepakatinya kerjasama Korea Selatan dan Amerika dan munculnya respon China yang melakukan aksi larangan Hallyu di China hingga tahun 2017 yang mana larangan Hallyu masih berlangsung. Bahkan pada tahun ini Korea Selatan melakukan pergantian presiden dari Park Geun Hye ke Moon Jae In. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori diplomasi budaya serta teori diplomasi publik sebagai alat analisa. Dari hasil analisis ini, didapatkan hasil bahwa peran yang dilakukan oleh suatu negara dalam mencapai kepentingannya tidak hanya dilakukan oleh pemerintah, melainkan pihak swasta juga dapat ikut berpartisipasi. Selain itu, dari hasil penelitian ini juga memperlihatkan bahwa sebuah opini yang di bentuk diharapkan bisa mendorong sebuah kebijakan agar pemerintah China dalam menghapus larangannya.
Collective Memory of Japanese Military Comfort Women and South Korean Media: The Case of Television Dramas, Eyes of Dawn (1991) and Snowy Road (2015

A nation's memory is a reconstruction of the past. Accordingly, this study explores how South Korean television (TV) dramas Eyes of Dawn (1991) and Snowy Road (2015) helped shape the collective memory of Japanese colonial rule. Both dramas highlighted the experiences of comfort women, Korean women forced to provide sex to Japanese soldiers. This study analyzes the representations, technical factors, and newspaper discourse of the dramas to examine how they influenced collective memories of comfort women. By comparing and contrasting the dramas, this study reveals that while both generated public awareness and controversy, Eyes of Dawn and Snowy Road represented differently oriented colonial memories of comfort women: A patriotic-oriented memory and a humanism-focused memory, respectively. Specifically, in illuminating colonial rule, Eyes of Dawn showed a traditional good and evil dichotomy, while Snowy Road revealed a more complex and diverse context. Given the socio-political contexts of 1991 and 2015, this study suggests that Eyes of Dawn functioned to inform the public about the comfort women, whereas Snowy Road aimed to reflect upon the impact of comfort women in South Korean society. Thus, while acknowledging that collective memory is a construct that can change over time, we contend that the media's role (especially TV drama) is critical in this process. More generally, this study contributes to the study of memory, journalism, history, and popular communication.
Hanok(Korean traditional house) village of Jeonju city became one of the most attractive tourist sites during less than 15 years. The number of visitors to the Hanok village was less than 100, 000 in 1999, but the number reached over 6, 000, 000 in 2014. Jeonju Hanok village has become the hottest tour attraction not only for traditional Korean culture and life but also for food eating. To attract more tourists, Jeonju city has done various marketing for Hanok village. This paper focuses on how Jeonju city government has done its cultural marketing to propagate the good images and news of Hanok village to all over Korea. One is to organized festivals and events. The city government also invited news reporters, teachers, scholars and public figures to the site. The government excavated stories of the area and spreaded them to the press. The government also induced drama and film shooting in the site. The image of Jeonju Hanok village has spreaded Korea successfully during the last 15 years. The government also has organized international cultural marketing. Non-traditional images of tourists in Hanok village go viral online and many specialists worry that these online photos with street food may erode the authenticity of Hanok village. The image war is going on between the city government, its photos, informations, and published materials on the one side, and the young generation who consume Hanok village with street foods and new plays, their photos of street foods, and other photos of various new plays such as with costume characters on the other side. It is not clear at this moment who wins this war or how new style can emerge from this war.

Untuk itu, isu ini menarik untuk ditulis, yakni dengan tujuan untuk menjawab pertanyaan penelitian: Mengapa Korea Utara menyatakan penyesalan dalam inter-Korean agreement terhadap Korea Selatan terkait kasus ranjau darat di DMZ pada 2015?. Analisa yang diangkat yakni menggunakan Teori Realisme Struktural dan Teori Perjanjian Intrnasional. This paper was submitted as a bachelor's thesis in 2017. It adopted the issue of inter-Korea agreement in 2015; which is significant because, inside the agreement, there was solidified North Korea's unprecedented statement of regret towards South Korea. That is why, the research question would be: why did North Korea stated its regret to South Korea through the inter-Korean agreement 2015? By doing so, 2 analytical tools will be used: theory of Structural Realism and theory of International Agreement.
